Showcase of traditional dances

A TWO-day traditional dance showcase featuring dancers from various performing groups will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre in Kuala Lumpur from tomorrow.
Held as part of the Malaysian Dance Festival, which runs till July 10, local dance enthusiasts are in for a treat as renowned dancers in their respective fields and disciplines take centre stage. The annual festival, currently in its third instalment, is organised by MyDance Alliance with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.
They include the founder-creative director of Sutra Dance Theatre, Ramli Ibrahim, Zhou Gou Xin (founder of Ellie Zhou Performing Arts), Zamzuriah Zahari (of Akademi Seni Kebangsaan) and Lim Gaik Choo (Jit Sin Independent High School Dancing Club).
Among the pieces are Mukhari Pallavi, an Odissi number that begins with the rag murti (literally the face of the rag) that depicts male divinity by Ramli and his students from Sutra, Awaiting a Korean dance clasped in ageless anticipation and emerging surge of tidal awakening and Breaking of Dawn, a Chinese dai dance of hope (performed by Zhou and his dancers).
