Bouquet of variety

12/04/2004

BATIK art artist David Yong Kheng Wah is hosting his first group
exhibition, "A Bouquet of Variety on Canvas, Land and Culture," at his
Hillside Corner Restaurant and Cafe, Wangsa Ukay, Ampang.

Yong comes from a family of professional artists. He and his brother
Cheng Wah followed their late father Yong Mun Sen's footsteps. David
uses his artworks to share his experience from his travels.

He said: "The walls at Hillside Corner Restaurant are free for artists
to display their works."

The exhibition features 22 works by Liew Choong Ching, Hoan Kee Huang
and Yap Kim Boon.

Liew, 31, born in Mentakab, Pahang started as a comic book artist before
painting portraits in fine art style. His seven pieces are priced from
RM1,000 to RM1,500 and mark his fascination with local people in a visual
narration style.

Sarawakian Hoan Kee Huang, 33, is a self - taught artist who loves to
depict his native State in all its richness of culture and customs.

He is painstaking in his attention to details on his portraits of
indigenous people, traditional cock-fight, hunting and other activities
in pieces like Up the Sarawak River and Paddy field.

His eight oil-on-canvas pieces are priced from RM1,500 to RM3,800.

Yap Kim Boon, 43, from Kuala Lumpur is "plein-air" artist who paints
landscape, flora and fauna with thick oil paint on canvas.

He uses self-made bamboo palette knives to create the desired depth and
three-dimensional effects in his works. His favourite compositions are
heliconia, jungle scenes, and moving water in lakes and rivers. His seven
pieces are priced from RM1,000 to RM RM5,300.

The exhibition is on until Sunday.
