Fine art and family ties

By Sharifah Arfah
Dec 22:

DISCOVER a unique selection of artwork by three local artists, bonded by family ties, at The Artists’ Space, Concorde Hotel in Shah Alam.
The exhibition, entitled 3 in 1, features more than 60 paintings by Nik Rafin Nik Mustapha, his wife Nurhayati Md. Yusoff and his brother-in-law Nurazmal.

Nik Rafin, a member of the Malaysian Watercolour Organisation and Wilayah Persekutuan Photographic Society, is a communications graduate with a minor in fine art and photography from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in the United States. His paintings are inspired by nature.

His varied experience includes being an illustrator and cartoonist for Marquette Tribune in the United States, as well as several solo and group exhibitions in the country and overseas. So far, his paintings have been bought by individuals and corporate organisations, such as Canon Malaysia and Sime Darby.

Nurhayati is among the emerging figurative women painters in the Malaysian art scene. She is most skilful using watercolour — the medium that has been her favourite since she was a child. She is also a member of Malaysian Watercolour Association.

Her true passion lies in studying facial expressions and figures, and she tries to capture the most touching aspect of the subject to be incorporated into her paintings. To date, she has participated in various group art exhibitions in the country.

Nurazmal, a fine arts graduate from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), concedes that his works of art are mostly an enigma to viewers. Events around him are his constant inspiration.

This exhibition is on till Jan 31. Viewing hours: 11am-11pm (Monday-Saturday) and 11am-7pm (Sunday). Admission is free. Call 03-5512-2200/fax 03-5512-2233 or visit www.concorde.net.
