Feb 13:
RENEWED awareness in art has led to a resurgence of art centres and galleries in Penang.
Among the front-runners in promoting all forms of art is the newly-opened Galeri Seri Mutiara at 118 Armenian Street.
The gallery, housed in a 150-year-old heritage building, was officially opened by State Assembly Speaker Datuk Yahaya Abdul Hamid recently.
In conjunction with the opening of the gallery, an inaugural art exhibition is being held there.
More than 100 paintings in various mediums by 40 artists are on display.
Director and curator of the gallery Koay Soo Kau, a gifted artist himself, is confident that the gallery would attract art lovers.
The gallery will also organise poetry sessions, music festivals and art talks to encourage more interaction among enthusiasts of the various art forms.
The gallery also has on display the works of the first-generation artists and pioneers of Penang art like well-known painters like Yong Mun Sen, Lee Kheng Yong, Khoo Ju Ping, Tay Hooi Keat and Khaw Sia.
The gallery is open daily from 11am till 6pm. For enquiries, call 04-262-0167.
