A love of lotus flowers

April 17:
ART Salon presents an exhibition entitled “Garden Of Paradise” by Soon Lai Wai who displays the beauty of the lotus flower in colourful forms.
All 32 pieces on display are done on oil on canvas. They include Dream: Silent Lotus series, Nature’s Journey: Orchid series and the Brewing Lotus series.
Soon uses bold and energetic strokes to bring out traditional Chinese art philosophy in his work.
The broad leaves, petals and long stalks allow him to explore the wide range of colours and textures. He uses a generous amount of white to bring together the array of these colours.
“Feelings of serenity and calmness are found in Soon’s paintings. The calm and harmonious colours interact and complement one another,” said Richard L. Davis, chairman of East Asian Studies and professor of History and East Asian Studies of Brown University in the United States.
Soon said: “I find the lotus unique because it contains a pure Asian soul. You also find it in many Asian countries. I also decided to grow them in my own garden after a holiday in Bali,” said Soon.
He has travelled widely throughout Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia to appreciate different strains of the flower and their natural habitats.
Soon’s works have been displayed in numerous exhibitions, including at the Metro Fine Art gallery and an exhibition to celebrate National Day at the City Art Gallery.
“Garden Of Paradise” can be viewed at XOAS Gallery, 76G Jln Universiti, Petaling Jaya. Viewing hours: 10am-7pm (Monday – Friday), 10am-5pm (Saturdays). Closed on Sundays and public holidays. Call 03-7955-0601.
