Fragments of lost recollection

Dennis Chua

THE Wei-Ling Gallery presents ‘Recollection’, artist and print-maker Izan Tahir’s solo exhibition this month.

Izan’s works mark a departure from traditional print-making whereby pieces are presented in multiple editions. She uses the technique of print-making to create a pallette of marks and impressions assembled into a singular artistic image or monoprint.

Izan describes the idea behind ‘Recollection’ as an expression of loss and rediscovery.

It addresses the fact that we live in an age of emigration, movement, mobility and forced or self-imposed exile from our countries of birth.

In her masterpieces, Izan tells viewers that the experience of loss is universal — loss of home, people, objects, moments, love and memories.

‘Recollection’ explores the rediscovery and recollection of lost treasures in one’s life. Its message is that most of the time, the piecing together of fragments of the tangible and intangible creates new feelings and hope, as well as the desire to see and experience the distant and the unknown.

Izan has spent much of her life overseas and has exhibited her works in London, Paris and South Africa.

‘Recollection’ is her first solo exhibition in Malaysia. It ends on June 28.

Wei-Ling Gallery is in Jalan Scott, (Brickfields), Kuala Lumpur. It is opened from noon to 7pm from Mondays to Fridays (weekends by appointment).
