Queenie’s feline fantasy
Dennis Chua
Aug 7:
NN GALLERY presents artist Queenie Chow’s first solo exhibition “Peek-A-Boo And Bon Bon”, showcasing her works from 2004 to 2006 in oils and acrylic on canvas, from Aug 13 to 30.
Born in Pahang, Chow graduated from Lim Kok Wing University College in 1996. In 2000, she and her friends formed Salt, an arts and crafts design team which specialises in customised book-binding, hand-made soft sculptures and T-shirts.
Chow approaches her masterpieces with a charming and naive style.
She makes use of the bright and playful textural approach, and the subtle method of producing a stylised flat surface to express the emotions of her childhood years.
Her paintings are mostly dedicated to cats, which have always fascinated her. Her cat portraits invite visitors to reminisce and reflect on their simple and carefree childhood days.
“Peek-A-Boo” is a showcase of cats. The cat portraits depict a multitude of feline poses. Some cats are curled up while others are poised to jump, languishing luxuriously in cosy interiors or simply making recognisable facial expressions.
“Bon Bon” is equally whimsical and sweet. It is a celebration of the many facets of childhood.
Chow’s works are influenced by contemporary Japanese art, particularly manga and anime. They evoke feelings of fearlessness and openness, simplicity and joyfulness, candour and innocence all at once.
The exhibition may appear whimsical but it is a subtle reminder for visitors not to lose track of the above qualities of childhood.
Self-taught artist Ang Boo Yeong’s hand-painted pebbles will also be on show. Yeong paints images of cats and other animals on natural and organically-shaped stones. These animals display a myriad of gazes and grins which are both mischievous and adorable.
Venue: NN Gallery, Jalan Sultan Sulaiman 1, Taman Ampang Hilir in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. Time: 9am to 6pm (Monday to Saturday).
