D: Dates for chutney and vanilla shake

Malani Gunaratnam

Aug 24, 2002

D IS for dates. Dates not only taste great but they are good for you. They are a good source of fibre, potassium, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. A serving of five or six dates contains about 20 calories.

They can be frozen up to a year without loss of taste or quality. Each variety has its own distinctive texture, sweetness and size.

I have used dates as a main ingredient to create a chutney and milk shake.

The Date and Lime Chutney can be kept in an airtight container, in a refrigerator for about 6-9 months. It is important to use a clean, dry spoon every time you scoop out the chutney.

The Vanilla Date Shake can be a healthy drink minus the vanilla ice-cream. You can use low-fat or skimmed milk as a substitute.
