J: Dish out the jackfruit

Malani Gunaratnam

Oct 5, 2002

WE are onto the Jackfruit for the letter J. Oblong-shaped, the tropical fruit grows in parts of Africa, Brazil and Southeast Asia. It originates from India.

In Indonesia and Malaysia, it is eaten naturally or used in desserts and salads, and some main dishes.

When it is green, both its flesh and edible seeds are used in curries and coconut-based stews.

Delicious dishes prepared with jackfruit can liven up any menu and are a delight in vegetarian dishes.

Cut pieces of jackfruit can be fried and stored in the freezer for a long time. They can be also enjoyed pickled.
