Fabulous Cakes, Quick & Delicious Home Baking Recipes
compiled by Periplus

Periplus/110 pages

I do enjoy being in the kitchen, soaking up the smells. One of my favourite smells is that of a cake baking. Alas, this has yet to happen in my kitchen since I do not own an electric mixer or anything of the sort.

In fact, the only two electric devices I have in my kitchen are a percolator and a toaster.

So it’s a relief that this step-by-step recipe book offers recipes that do not require those fancy electrical helpers.

The book starts off with the basics of baking. Very vital for baking novices like me. Then it proceeds to simple cakes such as sponge, butter and chocolate before proceeding to more sophisticated sorts that include fruit and vegetables in the mix.

Under Teacakes, I spotted the date and walnut loaf that looked simple enough.

There are also recipes for traditional fruit cakes along with celebration cakes such as black forest, tortes and something fancy like chocolate truffle cake.

Plus, learn how to make simple icing, shave chocolate and much else needed to dress your cake. Just a word of advice: Do not despair if your end product does not look like the one in the book.

Practise makes perfect. Give it a few tries. And enjoy the fruits of your labour. Literally!
