Blood donors association's member drive

AN association of Muar blood donors has been formed to ensure enough blood supply for Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital.

Chairman Othman Taib said the association, which was formed two months ago with 100 members aged above 18, was keen to have more members.

He said the association's main objective was to help the hospital in obtaining blood supply, particularly the right type in times of emergency.

"By grouping the donors and maintaining their full particulars, we can easily contact any one of our members anytime he or she is needed.

"In doing this, we relieve the hospital of the burden of locating the right individual donor."

According to Othman, the membership drive was not only to sign up people who want to donate blood but also those who had lots of contacts and could refer people.

He said that for the past four years, the specialist hospital has had a low supply of blood, forcing it to borrow from hospitals in other areas such as Batu Pahat, Malacca and Johor Baru whenever it faced a shortage.

He invited anyone above the age of 18 who was interested in becoming a member to contact the association's secretariat at 06-9521901, extension 290.

Othman was speaking at the launch of the association, which was held in Muar recently in conjunction with the closing function for a jogathon.

Johor Health Department medical deputy director Dr Arbain Lani officiated the events.

Dr Arbain said the formation of the association was a boon to the hospital.

"A drop of blood is crucial for someone. And, this deed is really helpful and should set an example to members of other localities in Johor."
