Sahlina Sahkirin

THE thrill of every Ramadan must be the visits to the many food bazaars in the city. Despite their busy schedules, city folk make it a point to go to these bazaars as early as possible to avoid the crowd.

At the Kampung Melayu food bazaar for example, the crowd begins to form as early as 4pm.

One of the favourite dishes is the traditional “nasi kerabu".

Stall owner, Zieman, 35, said he inherited the recipe from his ancestors, who specialised in preparing “nasi kerabu” and “nasi dagang".

“God willing, my business is good and I already have loyal customers who visit my stall every Ramadan.”

Another stall owner Razman Abdul Rahman, 36, said he always waited for Ramadan to do business as he would get the chance to prepare food for Muslims.

“It has been four years since I started operating this business during the fasting month. My specialties are cockles and mussels cooked in chilli, which I sell at RM5 per plate.

“On the first day of Ramadan, I prepared 60kg of various shells. At the end of the day, everything was sold out and I have many customers complaining that they didn’t get to buy any.”
