RESIDENTS in flood-prone areas in Kulaijaya are anxious about the current rainy season.

They are unhappy that the main problems that have triggered floods in the past have not been properly dealt with.

One of these is the failure of project developers to build a proper drainage system in construction sites.

A resident of Taman Mas in Kulaijaya, Roslaini Omar, 37, said her neighbourhood always experienced muddy floods during heavy rains.

The mother of five said this could have been caused by nearby construction sites.

She said the last mud flood occurred on Aug 26.

Roslaini urged the authorities to take action.

Another resident, technician Linda Mohamad, said the drainage system in the area should be upgraded and better maintained.

“It makes us anxious every time it rains. For two years, the problem has been haunting us.

“It is high time the authorities acted on it.”

The last flood affected more than 20 families in the area and another 15 in Kampung Tan Yok Fong.

Villager Hamidah Atan, 21, said she had a close call during the last flood.

She was preparing dinner for the family with her mother when it started to rain heavily.

Her 2-year-old son was sleeping on a mat in a bedroom.

“It took only half an hour for water to rise and flood my entire house up to half-a-metre high.

“I quickly ran into the bedroom to get my son.

“We also managed to save some of our belongings.”
