Mind the cars when jogging in this park

Sim Bak Heng

THE Sungai Kapeh recreational park near the second bridge in Segamat is not always a pleasant place to be in, say the residents who go there to jog or relax.

UNCOMFORTABLE STROLL IN THE PARK: It’s not uncommon for health-conscious walkers and joggers to have to breathe in acrid smoke from the open burning of leaves and park litter (left) or find themselves being honked at by vehicles on their jogging track in the Sungai Kapeh recreational park.

Their major complaints are the indiscriminate burning of leaves and dumping of rubbish in the park.

Residents are also not happy that vehicles are allowed to enter the park, thus posing a risk to park users on foot.

Administrative executive Lim Cheng Ling said it was very disturbing to see vehicles on the jogging track.

""If vehicles are allowed on a jogging track, then the track is no different than a road. In that case, what is the purpose of setting up the park?"

A local resident, Robert Lai, said it was common to see the park strewn with rubbish although bins were provided for the convenience of visitors.

"To complicate the problem, there is opening burning of leaves in the evening and the smoke is affecting the health of park users.

"I suggest that the gate leading to the park be closed to vehicles. The Department of Environment's enforcement officers should check on the open burning," he added.

Another regular jogger, Goh Li Siang, said he had encountered many motorcycles when jogging in the evening.

"Sometimes, the motorcyclists come in a gang. Their presence and the sound they create pose a danger and nuisance to us," he said.

A Segamat District Council councilor said the gate to the park was left open for vehicles sending workers to carry out repair works at the river.

"We will close the gate to prevent vehicles coming in. On the matter of the open burning, we will check on who the culprits are."
