The herd of about 15 animals was often seen roaming the area after dark.

Resident Mohd Yatim Mohd Dom, 84, said families living in the area were worried that they would be attacked by the animals, especially at night.

He said the herd had been entering fruit farms and roaming near their homes for the past one year.

Yatim said he once saw the herd scavenging at a rubbish dump near his house.

"I believe they were looking for food. They emerged from the bushes behind our house at about 8pm."

He said crops like banana, pineapple, tapioca and vegetables were also destroyed.

Several complaints had been lodged with the Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) but, so far, no action had been taken, he said.

Residents are concerned that the wild boar would pose danger, especially to those using a lane as a short-cut near the bushes at night.

"Although no attacks have been reported, we are worried about our safety," Yatim said.

Another concern of residents is the possible spread of Nipah virus.

"If the number of wild boar increases, the residents face the risk of contracting the disease. We hope Perhilitan will take action soon," Yatim said.
