Tee off and do your 'putt' for SPCA

THE Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Selangor is staging the inaugural SPCA Selangor Charity Golf Tournament 2008, themed "Pitching For Animals" to raise much-needed funds to support their animal welfare initiatives in the Klang Valley.

The tournament will be held on Oct 17 at Saujana Golf & Country Club, Kuala Lumpur, which is also contributing to the cause by waiving the venue rental and green fees. After the tournament, all participants will be invited to dinner and the prize-giving ceremony. Donne Ray Radford, lead singer of The Sound Of The Platters, will perform at the event.

Reservations are by a minimum donation of RM380 per player, or RM1,520 per flight. All donations are tax-exempt. Reservations can be made at the SPCA Selangor office or at The Old Club House in Jalan Bangkung, Bangsar.

SPCA requires approximately RM1.2 million to fund its services and activities each year; these include running the Animal Shelter & Adoption Centre, government lobbying, humane education, Klinik Kembiri (a dedicated spay-neuter clinic), Animal Inspectorate, and the community-based MissionHELP: Helping People Help Animals programme.

The organisation has been actively tackling animal welfare issues this year, moving beyond just welfare of companion animals like cats and dogs to include horses, urban macaques, sun bears and more.

The SPCA recently unveiled several new initiatives, such as the SPCA Selangor Equine Welfare Centre, which was set up in 2007, and is the first of its kind in Malaysia.

This centre aims to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abused, neglected and retired horses, and is currently based at the Awana Horse Spelling Station in Genting Highlands.

Another recent project involved Sunny the Sun Bear, who was caught by the villagers of Kampung Sekor, Pekan, who lured it with a concoction of cooking oil and rice.

The 8-year-old male bear was later sent to the Temerloh Mini Zoo run by Perhilitan, infamous for its inhabitants' poor living conditions. Alarmed, the SPCA team visited the zoo to find out how SPCA could help poor Sunny. After numerous follow-up calls to Perhilitan, Sunny was released back into the wild in Lanchang. SPCA is continuing to monitor Sunny's case, and hopes to assist in improving the conditions at the mini zoo.

In the last two weeks, SPCA has met twice with Selangor state government representatives to discuss its Stray Free Selangor (SFS) campaign.

SPCA aims to work closelywith the authorities to set up more spay-neuter clinics, run responsible pet ownership education programmes, promote humane guidelines for stray control efforts by local municipalities, and encourage differential licensing and effective legislation to prevent pet owners from abandoning their pets.

The government has received the proposal very well and will soon implement measures to curb the booming population of stray animals in a humane, affordable and effective way.
