FLOWERS speak volumes.
They can send myriad messages without the need for words. They work wonders for those who want to express their love to someone special or to console someone during a bereavement.
They can also be used as elements in a work of art, just like a painting or sculpture.
The Malaysia International Landscape and Garden Festival 2008 (Laman 2008) in Kuala Lumpur’s Lake Gardens Kuala Lumpur is an eye-opener for those of us who are not aware that there are more to plants than meets the eye.
Blessed with an extensive and rich variety of flora in the country, the exhibition showcases how nature can be turned into art.
With hundreds of exhibitors taking part in the festival, visitors can view different floral designs, including that of floral designer Joel Marc Frappier.
Celebrities Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lara Fabian, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Mexican President Vincente Fox have engaged the Canadian’s services. He’s certainly not your everyday florist!
“Malaysia has a lot of talent in this department. The only thing lacking is educational facilities to promote the art,” said Frappier, the World Flower Council president.
“Floral designing is all about expressing your emotions using any part of the plant like, say, a leaf’s texture. I also think flowers have personality!” he added.
The designer was awarded the La Palme d’or in 2007, one of floral industry’s most prestigious awards.
The exhibition is equivalent to a show of floral haute couture, with such displays common in Europe.
The expo is showcasing award-winning floral designs.
Vegetables, besides flowers, are also used in the floral sculptures and arrangements.
Also on display are specially-themed gardens like the Garden for All Seasons, International Galore, Landscape Garden Display and Rhythm of Nature.
Over 50 retailers are also selling plants and garden products.
The festival is also displaying an edible garden inspired by Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah.
Laman 2008 is organised by Jabatan Landskap Negara and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
The exhibition will end this Sunday. Visiting hours are from 9.30am to 9.30pm.
Entry fees are RM3 for adults and RM1 for children aged six to 12. It’s free for younger children and the disabled.
