ALOR STAR: There will be ample supply of beef in Kedah for the festive season, but prices will be five to 11 per cent higher. It is sold at RM18 per kg in the state.
Asked about the RM1 to RM2 increase in the price, state Veterinary Services Department director Dr Abdul Razak Zainal said it was inevitable due to high transport costs and higher feed and maintenance costs. He said about 10,000 head of cattle are available for the fasting month. His department is planning to import about 200 head from Thailand.
"Together with Kedah Agro Industries Bhd, we will try to ensure ample supply of beef for the fasting month," he said.
He added that the department was working out how much beef would be needed for Hari Raya, and would make arrangements by the middle of the month to have it ready.
