PUTRAJAYA: Lance-Corporal Zainudin Mat Isa lost his semi-automatic pistol in his attempt to stop the gunmen.
The off-duty police detective fired several shots at the gunmen before he was hit in the thigh and fingers.
The 40-year-old said he had parked his car in the outer lane of the driveway between Gate 7 and Gate 8 of the departure hall.
He was waiting for a friend, and despite being off-duty, was carrying his pistol.
"I heard gunshots behind me and turned around with my pistol ready. I fired at one of the gunmen and then shots came at me from all directions.
Zainudin said: "I don't know where I got hit first, my fingers or my thigh. It all happened so fast. I dropped to the ground and I played dead."
He said one of the gunmen walked up to him and took his pistol.
"I decided not to fight back as I was injured."
He saw the gunmen, about four to six of them, speeding off in two vehicles,
"Had I decided to keep quiet and not taken out my gun, I don't think I would have been shot at."
The father of six from Ulu Yam was grimacing in pain as he spoke. He is scheduled for a surgery today.
