THE proposed anti-hopping law to prevent elected representatives from joining other political parties may not take off, the House heard yesterday.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz said it may not see the light of day as it would restrict the freedom of elected representatives to decide on their political affiliation.
"Even I do not agree that such a law should be promulgated," he said at the Parliament lobby.
Nazri was responding to comments by Datuk Anifah Aman (BN-Kimanis) on Wednesday during the debate on a motion of thanks on the royal address that there was nothing wrong if Barisan Nasional elected representatives joined other parties.
He felt that Anifah's views were merely a reminder to the BN to pay attention to the needs of the people of Sabah and Sarawak.
Nazri did not think that Anifah's statement would affect BN or Umno's stability as he understood the feelings of MPs from Sabah.
