JITRA: Thirty-five people, including nine women, claimed trial to a charge of gambling at a recreational area near here.

The accused, aged between 18 and 60, pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read before magistrate Nabishah Ibrahim.

The charge was for illegal gambling under Section 6 (1) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953.

If convicted, they could each be fined up to RM5,000 or face not more than six months' imprisonment or both.

They allegedly committed the offence at Lye Huat Garden, Changlun here at 1.30am on Tuesday.
Nabishah fixed bail at RM1,000 and set July 15 for remention.
