'Promote cycling as means to commute'

GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the authorities to introduce steps to promote cycling and encourage more people to commute by bicycle.

Its president, S.M. Mohamed Idris, said the government should include safe bicycle lanes on all new roads and highways, while road kerbs should be modified to accommodate bicycle-cum-pedestrian paths.

"The government should also provide clear signage on bicycle routes," he said at a press conference announcing CAP's seventh bicycle campaign here yesterday.

Mohamed Idris said the government should introduce road designs that promote a safe and well-lit environment for cycling.

He said the safety of cyclists should be protected by restricting the use of motorised vehicles on the road during peak hours.
"The government should provide safe, convenient and cheap parking spaces for bicycles."

On the bicycle campaign, coordinator Ooi Kim Aun said it would take place at 8am on July 27, at the Tuanku Syed Putra building in Lebuh Downing, covering a distance of 12km.

He said the campaign was being held as motorised transport had become too expensive following the fuel price hike.

Ooi noted that regular cycling improves health.

"Bicycles are cheap to maintain as they do not require road tax, insurance and fuel."

He added that the campaign also served as a platform for people from all groups and races to mingle.
