GEORGE TOWN: Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) is reminding its customers to be wary of bogus bill collectors who ask for payments. TM Penang general manager Lai Hook Kian said isolated cases of impersonation had been reported here where customers were tricked into paying these unscrupulous individuals. Lai said TM's internal investigations showed that forged appointment letters bearing TM's old logo had been presented by the fraudsters to customers. He said TM had since lodged a police report on the matter.

GEORGE TOWN: High Court judicial commissioner Yaakob Md Sam granted Mohd Dovi, 18, a stay of execution of his deportation after his lawyer, R.S.N. Rayer, produced his birth certificate to show that he was born in Bukit Mertajam. Dovi was supposed to be deported today. He had pleaded guilty in the Special Sessions Court in Juru to being in the country without a valid pass on Nov 9 last year. The court, which handles cases of illegal immigrants, had on Dec 16 last year sentenced Dovi to three months' jail and one stroke of rotan. Rayer told the court yesterday that Dovi was not represented in the lower court and did not understand the nature and consequences of his guilty plea. Yaacob fixed April 22 for verification of his birth certificate by the National Registration Department and decision on withdrawing the charge.

Thalassaemia cases double
KANGAR: The government is intensifying efforts to check the rising trend in thalassaemia cases following the near doubling of cases in the last five years, says Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abd Rashid Shirlin. She said, according to the National Thalassaemia Register, 4,385 thalassaemia patients were recorded to date as compared with about 2,500 people in 2004.
