TASIK KENYIR: A holiday in Terengganu would not be complete if you don't go and swim with the kelah.

The 45-minute boat ride down Sungai Petang to the kelah sanctuary alone is worth the trip.

And the 15-minute hike through the lush rainforest near the Petang Island Resort is the perfect appetiser to the main course - swimming with the kelah (Malaysian mahseer) and other fish.

Three years ago, the Fisheries Department and the Central Terengganu Development Authority combined efforts to turn the river into a fish sanctuary.

As a result, the fish no longer fear humans, and will readily feed from the hand and swim around playfully.
Visitors are only allowed to feed the fish with pellets provided by the Fisheries Department.

Visitors can touch the fish, but cannot catch or hold them.
