KUALA LUMPUR: Police arrested a 50-year-old man and seized 6,000 pornographic and pirated movie discs in a raid on a house in Taman Datuk Senu in Sentul yesterday.

However, two other men, believed to be runners for a pirated optical disc syndicate, managed to escape.

The house had been under police watch for a week before the team from federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman raided it.

Cops charged with robbery
KUALA LUMPUR: Two policemen were charged in the Sessions Court yesterday with robbing a general worker from India of RM1,200.

Rizam Marzuki Mohd, 27, and Faizul Mustapa, 37, of Brickfields police station, pleaded not guilty to robbing Seturahman Sundaram, 27, at Jalan Nyaman Satu, Taman Gembira, at 10.30am on May 10.

Judge Mohamad Sekeri Mamat allowed Rizam and Faizul bail of RM15,000 in one surety each and fixed June 20 for mention.

Four parked cars razed

KUALA LUMPUR: A fire which broke out at the old Public Works Department quarters in Jalan Stadium yesterday spread to four cars parked nearby, destroying them all.

However, the unoccupied quarters were only slightly damaged.

The cars - a Nissan Cefiro, a Proton Iswara, a Perodua Kenari and a Perodua Kancil - were worth a total of RM170,000.

Twenty firemen in four fire engines arrived at the scene at 9.10pm and took 45 minutes to control the blaze.

Wave gate ready soon

BUTTERWORTH: Work to replace the tidal wave gate at Jalan Chain Ferry, here, to overcome flash floods is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

State Drainage and Irrigation Department deputy director Mohd Abu Bakar Osman said the project involved the installation of "tideflex" valves to replace the existing vertical gates.

He said the new system, which also integrated a gross pollutant trap, would enable the control of overflowing waters into the area during high tide.

Charged with girl's murder

IPOH: A 50-year-old man was charged at the magistrate's court yesterday for murdering a 17-year-old schoolgirl in Kuala Kuang, Chemor, last week.

Chai Soon Peng, a father of four, is alleged to have murdered Yee Wei Qing in his house at Kampung Baru in Kuala Kuang, between 9.25am on May 6 and 1.25am the next day.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Ishrakh Saad applied for a another mention date as the post-mortem and DNA reports were not ready.

FRU to set up new unit

IPOH: The police Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) plans to set up horse-mounted units nationwide.

The move was necessary to enhance the FRU's capabilities when faced with aggressive rioters, said Internal Security and Public Order Deputy Director Datuk Jamaluddin Khalid.

"We will seek the inspector-general of police's consent to form the units," he said after an FRU course here yesterday.

Jamaluddin said such a unit had been formed in Kuala Lumpur for training. - Bernama

Alienating private land

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will negotiate with owners of private land where more than 370 national type (Tamil) primary schools are located, to alienate the land to the government.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator T. Murugiah said the government would ask for the land to be alienated at no cost and handed over to the Education Ministry for the pupils' future and human capital development.

"The schools will then be eligible for assistance."
