KUALA LUMPUR: MCA vice-president Datuk Ong Tee Keat yesterday announced that he would be contesting the party presidency at its triennial elections in October.
The transport minister said he decided to go for the number one post after weeks of careful consideration.
"I have decided to offer myself for the presidency in view that the incumbent, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting, is not seeking re-election."
Tee Keat announced his intentions at a function hosted by the Federation of Serdang Chinese NGOs, after his return from London on official duties.
His decision came as no surprise since he has been touted as a possible successor to Ka Ting since the latter announced on June 28 his decision not to contest.
Tee Keat, who is also the Selangor MCA chief, is the first leader to announce his bid.
Besides Tee Keat, other leaders who are expected to join the race include former vice-presidents Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and Datuk Chua Jui Meng.
Tee Keat said he was ready for the challenge ahead.
"Now is a crucial time for change and in this unprecedented testing times, as I am a member of the existing leadership, I'm ready to take up the challenge."
