Badminton / Asian Junior Championships: Unseeded Syawal shocks top seed Tanongsak

SYAWAL Ismail shocked boys' singles top seed Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand to advance to the quarter-finals of the Asian Junior Badminton Championships at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

The unseeded Syawal secured a hard fought 16-21, 21-16, 22-20 win over Tanongsak, who is in Thailand's senior squad, in 48 minutes in the fourth round.

Joining Syawal in the last eight is Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin who defeated Ng Zong Ren of Singapore 21-12, 21-12.

Kuan Kam Chung crashed out when he lost 21-8, 21-10 to Wang Zhengming of China.

Syawal and Iskandar, however, were unfortunate as they will be meeting pre-tournament favourites Gao Han of China and Park Sung Min of South Korea respectively today.
In the boys' doubles, top seeds Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang stayed in the hunt when they booked their quarter-final berth with a 21-14, 21-16 win over Berry Angriayawan-Muhammad Ulinuha of Indonesia in the third round.

They will meet Kim Dae Eun-Kim Ki Eung of South Korea in the quarter-finals today.

Hee Chun and Vivian Hoo were the only survivors in the mixed doubles when the moved into the next round by beating Hiroki Takeuchi-Eriko Tamaki (Jpn) 21-10, 21-12 in 25 minutes.

They will meet Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen-Chiang Kai Hsin for a place in the semi-finals today.
