2008/08/30Tailor-made for MUETJARINA Abdul Rahman from SMK Taman Ehsan, Kepong, Selangor prepares students for the Malaysian University English Test (MUET). With the first test set according to the new MUET specifications just around the corner, Jarina finds Effective Text For Muet (second edition), a useful and systematic text and Muet Model Tests, a helpful compilation of six tests complete with answers. "I find the notes and exercises well developed. There are explanations of how to create expository writing and develop thesis statements. "The reading passages are current and varied too. "Muet Model Tests provides students with ample practice, propelling them towards examination excellence." Effective Text For Muet is sold in two forms: with or without the compact disc which contains the listening scripts. Lessons cover all the four components of (MUET). Exercises and model tests have been carefully prepared following the latest MUET format. The second edition also has a section on grammar. "English is an essential tool of communication and a good command of the language is an asset. "Recognising this need, MUET marks the importance of the English language as an international language in this borderless world. " These two books are timely, as students need both guidance and practice to sit for this test, even more so with the implementation of the new test specifications." says Associate Professor Koh Soo Ling, UiTM lecturer and author of the books. Another teacher, S. Gunasegran, from SMK Seafield, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, has been teaching the MUET syllabus for eight years. It is crucial that students communicate effectively and these skills need to be transmitted to schools and tertiary institutions to ensure the marketability of students and graduates. "The books are intended for classroom use as well as for self-study. The writing section covers a spectrum of topics that encourages students to be interested in contemporary issues. "The speaking section prepares students effectively, whether individually or in groups. "The listening section is professionally done as the scripts are recorded by both Malaysian and native speakers. This helps students to respond appropriately to what they hear. "Listening situations cover a range of genres from lectures to discussions," says Gunasegran.
