INTERNATIONAL healthcare company Bayer is sending two students on a seven-day field trip to Germany in November.
This initiative is under Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE), the company's youth education programme.
Vigren V. Radha from Universiti Sains Malaysia and Chan Sze Meun from University of Malaya (UM) were chosen from 10 finalists from tertiary institutions all over Malaysia. They were tasked to come up with a pro-environmental programme.
Vigren, who is studying mechanical engineering, worked with motorcycle company Modenas to create a vehicle which runs on biodiesel extracted from palm oil.
Chan, a student of environmental engineering, conducted a recycling campaign at her faculty and residential college.
On their trip to Germany, the two students will be taken on a tour of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the municipal waste management facilities.
They will also participate in discussions with Bayer to learn the various environmental policies being implemented by the company.
Bayer hopes that the students will gain an exposure to the various environmental measures being practised in Germany.
The students will join 50 delegates from 17 countries to discuss and exchange ideas for a greener environment.
The BYEE programme is organised by Bayer Malaysia in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme with the support of Universiti Putra Malaysia. Currently in its third year, it is endorsed by the Higher Education Ministry. -- By MOHD NOOR ASWAD
