2008/10/04SCHOOLS: Learning Science through the performing artsSUBASHINI SELVARATNAM
WHAT can the fictional King Khan and Princess Sue Ki teach school children about Science? SMK Hamid Khan is one of five schools which took part in the recent ACTology-Petrosains National Science Theatre Competition at Malaysia Tourism Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Performances were in accordance with the theme The Science of Energy. SMK Hamid Khan rocked the stage from the start with its witty script. The warrior who solves this problem gets to marry beautiful Princess Sue Ki. After many years, four warriors return to Mollywood to share with the king their discoveries using the wonders of energy. Each warrior presents his inventions ranging from electricity generating turbines and the creation of methane for biomass fuel to the harnessing of solar power. At the end, the warrior with the solar energy use manages to solve the crisis. And he gets to marry Princess Sue Ki. SMK Hamid Khan bagged the first prize for its brilliant performance and strong message on energy. The prize covers an educational trip to Hong Kong, a multimedia set and a Science development programme for the school. The school's English and Multimedia teacher Nurazila Abdullah says: " The students practised hard for the play after school hours. They also learned to work together and demonstrated maturity." Nurazila believes teachers can bring Science to life through the performing arts. Other schools which took part in the competition were SMK (T) St David (Malacca), SM Sains Machang (Kelantan), SMK Balung, Tawau (Sabah) and SMK St Thomas, Kuching (Sarawak). Each team comprised eight students and two supervising teachers. The contest was an initiative by Petrosains and was endorsed by the Education Ministry.
