Airline man under sex probe
KUCHING: A former Air- Asia station chief is under investigation for sexual harassment. A report was lodged by a 31-year-old stewardess last month against the suspect who is in his 40s. The stewardess claimed the suspect took her to his house at Taman Woodlands and tried to remove her uniform on Jan 5. She managed to stop him by telling him that she was having her menses then. Police sources also said the suspect was sacked after the report was lodged. Kuching police chief Assistant Commissioner Wong Wai Loong said the suspect was out on police bail.
Body found in garbage truck
ALOR STAR: Three Alor Star City Council workers were shocked to find a partially burnt body of a girl in their garbage truck after dumping the contents of a bin into the vehicle yesterday. The unidentified girl, believed to be in her teens, was dressed in T-shirt and shorts. Her hair, legs and hands had been burnt. Council worker Mohd Zawawi Abdul Majid said he and his colleagues were collecting rubbish when they made the discovery about 8.30am at the Mergong industrial area. The girl's body was sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for post-mortem.
Scholarships for Japanese studies
KUALA LUMPUR: Applications for scholarships for Japanese studies and teacher training can be made from tomorrow. The Japanese government will provide monthly allowances of 134,000 yen (RM4,288) for Japanese studies and 172,000 yen for teacher training. Applicants for Japanese studies must be 18 to 29 years old, while for teacher training, they must be below 35 with at least five years of teaching experience. Robbers strike at factory
KUALA LUMPUR: First he was gagged, blindfolded and bound. Then he was beaten up. But the 28-year-old security guard managed to find his way to a neighbouring factory in Kepong yesterday to raise an alarm after his factory was robbed. The guard stumbled upon a group of 12 men about 4.30am. He ran off to call for help but the men caught and overpowered him. They stole two one-tonne lorries. The guard managed to loosen the blindfold and hopped to the factory next door to seek help.

NGO launches scheme to 'adopt' 317 war orphans
KUALA LUMPUR: Yayasan Wanita Islam (Yati) launched its two-year Adopt the Palestinian Children programme on Friday to raise funds for 317 children whose parents had died during the Gaza conflict. In this programme dubbed "Papa", the public can contribute between RM350 and RM3,500 yearly to provide clothes, food, build schools and counselling to help the children recover from the tragedy. Papa director Datin Nor Azlin Ibrahim said the money collected would be distributed equally to each child. She said Yati was working with non-governmental organisations Al-Solah Al-Islamiyiah Society in Rafah and Qariah Athfal SOS in Gaza to help more poor and orphaned Gaza children. Yati expected to help 1,000 children in two months, she said.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 25-year-old Indonesian woman was found stabbed to death at an apartment in Taman Sri Sinar, Segambut, here yesterday. Her naked body was found in the master bedroom. Her employer, a 68-year-old man, found the body at 5pm. He had gone there to check on the woman, who worked as a cleaner in Kepong, after she failed to turn up for work yesterday morning and did not answer her phone. Power tariffs depend on oil
KUALA SELANGOR: Tenaga Nasional Berhad will retain the present electricity tariffs as long as the price of oil, gas and coal remained unchanged. President and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh said TNB's concern was to ensure effective use of electricity. "TNB had a meeting with the prime minister (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) recently to discuss the issue. I told him that we will try to retain the electricity tariff," he said after opening a TNB smart programme seminar. The government had announced a 3.7 per cent reduction in electricity tariff from 32.5 sen/kWh to 31.31 sen/kWh starting March 1.
'HIV test to protect couples'
KANGAR: The requirement for couples wanting to marry in Perlis to go for blood test is not to cause them inconvenience, state Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Jafperi Othman said. He said the test was made compulsory to safeguard the interests of Muslim couples and their marriage. After getting the results of the test, and if the partner was found to be a HIV carrier, it would be up to the couple to decide whether or not to continue with the marriage.
