PETALING JAYA: Myanmar should open its doors to foreign aid for victims of last week's deadly cyclone.

Peace Malaysia co-ordinator Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said yesterday Yangon should do the right thing and let in international aid teams.

"If the government has any compassion for the people, it should allow foreign experts into the country."

The Jerlun MP said Peace Malaysia would begin mobilising aid once the situation in Myanmar had settled down.

"It will not be long before water-borne diseases begin to affect the survivors.
"We may have to get vaccines."

He said most Malaysian NGOs were already busy with their own relief plans, with Mercy Malaysia the first one off the blocks.

"They are representing Malaysia at this time and are doing a fine job," he said.

According to foreign reports, up to 100,000 people are missing or dead after cyclone Nargis lashed parts of Myanmar on May 2.

Thousands of tonnes of aid are waiting to be flown into the country but the junta was blocking foreign aid workers.

The military government is reported to be accepting only aid but not the workers.
