2008/07/20'Take care of nature's gifts'By : Ridzwan Abdullah
KUALA LUMPUR: The country's environment must be protected at all cost for future generations, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said. If the destruction continued unabated, future generations would have to pay the price, he said. "Even in religion, we have been told to shun activities that damage the environment. "Those who do will be made accountable for their actions," Abdullah said at the launch of the Malaysia International Landscape and Garden Festival 2008 (Laman 2008) at the Lake Gardens here yesterday. Later, Abdullah said Malay-sians were losing millions in revenue by not developing horticulture and landscaping as full-fledged industries. This is despite the country's natural advantage in terms of natural resources and suitable climate conditions, and being well positioned to challenge other market leaders. He cited the Netherlands as one country that had done well with its floral industry. "Only our orchids are popular in the export market, but I believe there are many other plants with similar potential," he said. Certain plants found in abundance in the country were sought after for their medicinal value. Laman 2008, which ends on July 27, is organised by the National Landscape Department and the Housing and Local Government Ministry. The event, endorsed by the International Federation of Parks & Recreation Administration, showcases products and designs from local and international landscape and horticulture industry. Local and overseas exhibitors have created more than 150 exceptional displays and presentations in a park-setting environment. Laman 2008 is also the meeting point for local and international industry players to make business contacts.
