State executive councillor for Agriculture, Natural Resources and Entrepreneur Development Yaakob Sapari said it was important to ensure that consumers had access to clean water at all times.
"The usage of existing water tanks and internal piping system which are made of zinc or iron always affect the quality of treated water from Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas).
"Treated water from Syabas complies with Health Ministry's standards before it is channelled to individual meters but it changes colour or contains rust once it enters the internal piping system or the water tanks in houses," he said at a press conference held in conjunction with Syabas' consumer awareness programme on water quality improvement yesterday.
He said the management of existing buildings must also replace their water tanks and internal piping system.
"The management must also clean water tanks in buildings under their care, at least once in six months," he added.
According to statistics, Syabas recorded 212 complaints regarding the quality of treated water in July and 67 of them involved problems with the internal piping system.
