The birds were kept in 25 cages beneath mounds of vegetables on an Indonesian-registered vessel manned by 11 crew members that was intercepted by the marine police here yesterday.
The sparrows, believed to be used for religious purposes, were brought in without a permit from the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), said Selangor marine police operations officer Assistant Superintendent Abu Bak Mohammad.
Police detained a 63-year-old crew member. "This is the first arrest involving the smuggling of sparrows."
The seized birds will be sent to Perhilitan.
