MALAYSIA Petronas are one win away from the Malaysia International Basketball Championship title after a gritty 92-78 victory over winless Hong Kong at the Maba Stadium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
A day after an inspiring 93-92 win over Singapore Slingers in overtime, Malaysia looked lethargic but captain Soo Eng Heng stepped up with a game leading 21 points for their third win in four matches.
Malaysia nearly blew a 13-point halftime lead when Hong Kong surged ahead 73-72 in the fourth quarter but a 13-0 run from 77-76 saw Malaysia coast at the end with American import Brad Bridgewater scoring 17 points.
"The players felt pressured because I told them I needed this game very much. We allowed Hong Kong too easy baskets on our turnovers but the major thing is we have come this far and I hope we can make it," said coach Goh Cheng Huat.
Malaysia are tied with Singapore at the top of the table after the Slingers beat India 100-71. A win over Kyung-hee University of South Korea today will ensure Malaysia emerge champions.
RESULTS -- Singapore Slingers 100 India 71, Malaysia Petronas 92 Hong Kong 78, Kyung-hee University 92 Pure-Youth & Construction 98.
FIXTURES -- Today: India v Hong Kong (4pm), Pure-Youth & Construction (Tai) v Singapore Slingers (6pm), Malaysia Petronas v Kyung-hee University (Kor) (8pm).
