CHINA'S Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia, the World No 2 and 3, stamped their mark by qualifying for the quarter-finals but third seed Li Jia Wei of Singapore was surprisingly shown the door in the Volkswagen Women's World Cup at the KLBA Stadium in Cheras yesterday.

Guo Yue, the reigning world champion, started her Group A campaign with a 11-6, 11-8, 11-2, 5-11, 11-7 win over Dominican Republic's Wu Xue.

However, the 20-year-old paddler had to work harder in her second match against Hong Kong's Jiang Huajun, winning 7-11, 3-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-9, 9-11, 11-7 to book her quarter-final spot.

Guo Yue, who won a gold and bronze in the Beijing Olympic Games, said the pressure was greater on her to perform as the top seed.

Teammate Xiaoxia easily beat the Netherlands' Li Jiao and Feng Tianwei, 4-0 and 4-1, respectively, in her Group B matches.
Jia Wei, who helped Singapore win a silver in Beijing, lost both her Group C matches.

The World No 6 was stunned 11-8, 11-4, 11-7, 11-4 by 39-year-old Gao Jun of the United States in her opening match.

The Singaporean needed to win her second match against Hong Kong's Tie Yana but found her too hot to handle, losing 18-20, 11-9, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4.

Tie Yana and Gao Jun, by virtue of winning two group matches, will play in today's quarter-finals.

Malaysia's sole hope, Beh Lee Wei, lost both her Group D matches easily.
