KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy MCA Youth chief Datuk Ling Hee Leong is running for the top post, setting the stage for a possible showdown with secretary-
general Wee Ka Siong at the October party elections.

Ling, the eldest son of former president Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, said he would make an official announcement next month.

Ling is also the Kuala Kangsar division MCA Youth chief.

Deputy Education Minister Wee is expected to make an announcement today on his bid for Youth chief.

Incumbent Datuk Liow Tiong Lai had announced he would not be seeking re-election.

He is speculated to be eyeing the deputy presidency.

The showdown between Ling and Wee had been described by the Chinese press as whisky versus pu-er tea — because of their differing personalities and political styles.

The English-educated Ling is sociable, thanks to his chi, he, wan, le wen hua ( e at , drink, play and be merry culture) which was viewed with derision by his detractors.

The 39-year-old Ling is, however, unperturbed. He has called it “relationship-based” politics.

Wee, 44, is Chinese educated and articulate in airing his views. The MCA Johor Baru division chief is also wellknown among the Chinese community because of his early work in highlighting numerous social issues in Johor Baru.

Both are popular with the delegates and the contest is expected to be keenly fought.

Ling is also vying for the Perak Youth chief post and will be facing Chenderiang assemblyman Dr Mah Hang Soon.

Incumbent Datuk Tan Chin Meng cannot defend the post as he is past the age limit of 45.
