SHAH ALAM: Selangor has allocated RM1 million for disaster relief in Myanmar in the wake of cyclone Nargis.

Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the decision was made at the state executive council meeting yesterday.

He said the state government would co-ordinate efforts with non-governmental organisations to collect donations in cash and kind for distribution in Myanmar by Yayasan Amal Malaysia.

State Education and Human Development Committee chairman Dr Halimah Ali said Yayasan Amal was chosen due to its experience and track record.

"It previously provided disaster relief after the tsunami in Aceh as well as the earthquakes in Pakistan and Iran."
Locally, the foundation had distributed RM1 million provided by the Kelantan government to Johor flood victims.

Dr Halimah, previously a volunteer with Yayasan Amal's medical bureau, said aid would be channelled directly to victims.

"The funds will not be handled by third parties and donors can be assured that victims will get the aid."

State Investment, Industry and Commerce Committee chairman Teresa Kok appealed to religious organisations and the public to help the Myanmar people.

"We know many will want to help, so please come forward and we can work together to take relief to those in need."

State Welfare, Women Affairs, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Rodziah Ismail said the state secretariat would open its doors for donations of food, medicines, clothes and blankets.

"We will set up a collection centre and will announce contact numbers over the next few days."
