SEREMBAN: The mosquito-transmitted Chikungunya virus, which was detected in several locations in Jempol recently, has been eradicated.
Out of the 127 suspected cases there, 32 were reported to be positive of the mosquito-transmitted fever in areas such as Kampung Baru Cina Air Hitam, Kampung Baru Air Hitam (Felcra), Felda Lui Selatan 2 and Felda Raja Alias.
State Health director Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar confirmed that the epidemic in Jempol had been cleared and that the department was monitoring the area.
"We have conducted fogging and gotong-royong to clear the surrounding areas of potential mosquito-breeding locations.
"Jempol has been the only case in the state and we hope to educate the public to take precautions to prevent it happening in other areas," said Zainal.
"Home owners should ensure there are no breeding grounds inside and outside their homes."
He said Negri Sembilan had the second highest number of cases reported in the country, after Johor, and the department was taking the matter seriously.
However, he said the situation was under control and there was no cause for alarm.
The Chikungunya virus causes symptoms similar to dengue fever and is transmitted to humans by Aedes mosquitoes. Chikungunya virus is not fatal, unlike serious cases of dengue.
