KUALA LUMPUR: Two men, one armed with a pistol, escaped with RM2.7 million after hijacking a security van operated by Mahmood Security at 7pm on Tuesday.
The men also escaped with a pistol and a pump-action shotgun taken from the security guards in the van at the DHL Express office car park in Jalan Ipoh.
The van was found abandoned behind a building, a kilometre away from the scene of the robbery, five hours later.
The money and shotgun were missing but the pistol, ammunition and handphones taken from the guards were left inside the vehicle.
The van was later taken to Sentul police headquarters where a forensics unit team inspected it for clues, lifting several sets of fingerprints for analysis.
Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Zakaria Pagan said police detained the three guards and three staff of the courier company to assist in investigations.
He said police obtained remand orders to hold the men for a week.
In their report on the incident, the guards said when they arrived at the scene, one of them alighted from the back of the vehicle.
As the unarmed guard was walking towards the courier company's office, two men approached him.
One of the men pointed a pistol at him and then ordered the driver of the vehicle and another guard to get down from the van.
The two men relieved the guards of a pistol and the shotgun before driving off in the van.
Zakaria said the courier company was the last stop made by the security van, after which it was supposed to return to its headquarters in Shah Alam.
He said investigations revealed the money stolen had been collected from the van's six previous stops.
Zakaria said police had obtained closed-circuit television camera footage from the office of the courier company but this proved to be a dead end as the robbers were not caught on tape.
