KUALA LUMPUR: All he wanted to do was protect his brother from being attacked.
Instead, the teenager was kicked and this prompted him to stab the attacker, T. Kumaresan, 30, with an iron rod, killing the man.
Yesterday, the youth, a school dropout, was sentenced to five years' jail after he pleaded guilty to culpable homicide not amounting to murder at his house in Taman Sri Rampai, Wangsa Maju, between 2.30am and 3am on Aug 28, 2004.
Sessions Court judge Mohamad Sekeri Mamat ordered the jail term to run from the date of arrest on Jan 5, 2006.
Counsel Khor Jit Sheng pleaded for leniency for the youth who was 16 at the time.
"His guilty plea shows that he is remorseful and would like to start a new life after serving his sentence," said Khor, adding that the youth had apologised to the victim's family.
