KUALA TERENGGANU: Businessman Nazmi Gazali's house was in 1.5 metres of water on Monday, destroying a lot of his belongings.
And for the past two days Nazmi, 43, and his family from Kampung Taman Desa Pusu 3, had to make do at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Kompleks Gong Badak canteen.
It was the relief centre for 820 victims, from 156 families.
But yesterday, Nazmi was all smiles.
All it took was a brief visit by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin to the centre.
The king, accompanied by the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, handed out hampers as well as a small donation to the victims at the canteen around noon.
Also present were Regent Advisory Council member Tengku Sri Panglima Raja Tengku Baderulzaman, Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said and several assemblymen.
"I was really touched by his visit and a little proud. This was the first time I came face to face with the king. He came just to give us some hampers," Nazmi said, adding that he spoke to the king about the floods.
Housewife Engku Esah, 51, also from the same village as Nazmi, was very excited that she could meet the Raja Permaisuri, as it was her first time seeing her.
"My heart was beating quite fast. The visit was really unexpected. This is one good thing about the flood thus far. If it wasn't for it, I could not have met the queen," she said, adding she was happy that the royalty was concerned about the people's welfare.
Kamaruddin Mohamad, 50, a Public Works Department staff, was also overjoyed by the visit as it showed that the king cared for the victims.
"I thanked him for visiting us," he said.
