INCUMBENT Malaysia Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has to date received six nominations from the 15 affiliates.
Deputy president Karim Ibrahim said Tuesday's count stood at six after Perlis, Pahang, Kelantan, Johor, Malacca and Sabah nominated Shahidan who had offered to defend his post at the MAAU Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Dec 14. The closing date for nominations is Dec 5.
"This is a clear indication that affiliates want Shahidan to continue leading the Union," Karim said in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Karim said since taking over as president in 2006, Shahidan had contributed immensely to the MAAU in terms of ideas and finance, and under his stewardship, it sealed a RM5 million sponsorship deal recently.
"Before this we had depended on funding from the government but with money in our coffers, we should be able to finance some of our programmes," said Karim, who confirmed that at the AGM to be held in Kuala Lumpur, posts for the president and two vice presidents would be the main agenda.
