Malaysia’s Wong Mei Chew beat Finland’s Anu Niemenen in the first round of the China Open yesterday and will face China’s Zhu Jingjing today.

LEE Chong Wei didn't have the best of starts but the World No 1 did enough to move into the second round alongside men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Zakry Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari in the China Open in Shanghai yesterday.

Chong Wei, the top seed, dropped the first game against Qiu Yanbo of China before securing an 8-21, 21-14, 21-16 win in 52 minutes.

Yanbo had also taken Chong Wei to three games in the quarter-finals of the Japan Open which the Malaysian also won.

Chong Wei will meet Hong Kong's Ng Wei, who beat Macau's Lam Chi Man 21-7, 21-10, in the second round today.
However, there were no such problems for his main rival Lin Dan of China who thrashed Macau's Cheang Wai Lok 21-2, 21-11 and he plays compatriot Gong Weijie in the second round.

Veteran Wong Choong Hann also cruised to the second round after beating Chetan Anand of India 21-10, 21-14 and takes on Denmark's Peter Gade Christensen, who defeated Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong 21-9, 21-18, today.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong, who are aiming for at least a place in the semis to qualify for the Super Series Masters Finals in Kota Kinabalu next month, snatched a 21-12, 21-18 win over Songphon Anugritayawon-Tesana Panvisvas of Thailand in just 20 minutes. They will meet China's junior pair Chai Biao-Liu Xiaolong in the second round.

Zakry-Fairuz also had an easy match as they beat compatriots Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah 21-16, 21-14 and will play another Malaysian pair Hong Chien Hun-Choong Hann today.

Veterans Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah also made it to the second round after beating compatriots Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock 21-19, 12-21, 22-20 and meet South Koreans Ko Sung Hyun-Kim Ki Jung next.

Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng also did well to beat Anders Kristiansen-Simon Mollyhus of Denmark 21-15, 21-17 and will take on third seeded Koreans Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae in the second round.

In the women's singles, Wong Mew Choo won the first game 21-9 and led 12-6 against Anu Niemenen of Finland when the latter conceded a walkover due to injury.

Mew Choo will face a difficult match against China's back-up player Zhu Jingjing today.

Julia Wong also pulled through with a 21-9, 21-17 win over Weny Rahmawati and will take on World No 1 Tine Rasmussen of Denmark today.
