KUALA LUMPUR: A Vietnamese woman was killed when fire destroyed a 24-hour supermarket in Selayang yesterday.

The body of Quyan Kim Wan, 30, was found at 8.45am in the supermarket's toilet after the fire was put out.

A fire department spokesman said a distress call was received at 6.06am.

Firemen tried to locate the trapped victim but to no avail.

He said the fire was put out by 7.45am but the victim's body was only found an hour later.
The victim's colleague, Rita Kaur said, "The fire started in the storeroom. I went to look for Kim Wan and found her in the toilet."

However, she said the victim did not respond to her calls and she ran out of the building to get help.

Rita said the victim usually worked the 9pm to 10am shift.

In Petaling Jaya, a housewife in her early 30s saved her two children and husband when a fire broke out at their house yesterday.

Norhaizan Sulaiman, her 5-old son and 7-year-old daughter were watching television at 3.15pm when they heard an explosion from the kitchen at the double-storey house in Lorong 2C/11P, Taman Medan.

"I rushed my children out of the house," she said.

"Then, I ran back into the house to wake up my husband who was asleep in the living room."

She said a passer-by who saw the fire called the Fire and Rescue Department.

The department's operations officer Zainal Elieas Abdul Aziz said they received a call at 3.34pm.

"It took us several minutes to control the fire.

"Only the top floor of the house was gutted."
