JOHOR BARU: The large number of HIV cases in Kampung Kadut is symptomatic of the problem in Segamat, said state Women and Family Development, Welfare and Health Committee chairman Dr Robiah Kosai.
She said there were four more unidentified addicts for every one registered addict.
"We are aware of the large number of HIV cases in Segamat and we believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg."
Dr Robiah said it was difficult to identify the exact number of HIV cases as they normally kept away from the authorities.
"Once we identify a positive case, we would do further screening on immediate family members to keep a record of their health.
"From there on, their health will be monitored.
"Unfortunately, these addicts are elusive.
"They do not want to be treated and, sometimes, the family members are unco-operative," she said.
Dr Robiah said most of the victims contracted HIV by sharing needles when taking drugs while a smaller number were due to sexual contact and babies born to HIV mothers.
Based on state Health Department records, Dr Robiah said the largest age group affected by HIV was between 30 and 45.
"Those in this group are usually hardcore heroin addicts who shared needles and syringes back in the 1980s before there was any awareness of the HIV menace."
She said Johor had 13,682 HIV cases, with men making up 93 per cent of the number.
