The three-in-one Iron Aid offers drying, ironing and refreshing functions in one appliance.

With the current rainy season, a dryer for doing laundry is a godsend but a dryer that also irons and deodorises your clothes, like Electrolux’s Iron Aid, is divine. RIDZWAN A. RAHIM writes.

WHAT: Electrolux Iron Aid tumble dryer

IT’S LIKE: A dryer that also irons your shirts and refreshes your suits. So you’ll always look like Barack Obama.

PRICE: RM3,594

Q: I have a question: if I were a superhero and I like ironing, does that make me Iron-Man?

A: That’s the stupidest joke I’ve heard this week.

Q: But it’s true: I do love ironing. I put on my iPod and let my mind wander when I iron.

A: Well then, you are in the 15 per cent minority. Everyone else thinks ironing is a necessary evil of our civilised society, according to a 2006 survey by the University of Bonn at the request of Electrolux. It’s boring, time-consuming and requires skills, and ranks as Europe’s most disliked chore.

Q: Well, why isn’t Electrolux doing anything about it?

A: They are. They have introduced Iron Aid, a tumble dryer designed to be used after washing clothes. Load, start, relax and when the drying is done, put on a smooth shirt — no ironing!

Q: Really? How does it iron?

A: Not in a direct way. Rather, it “de-wrinkles” your clothes, thanks to a steam phase at the end of the regular drying cycle.

The steam cycle also helps relax the fibres of garments through a combination of powerful steam injection, gentle air flow and a tailored drum movement, making them much easier to iron should they require a more pressed look. Goes very well with your refreshed suit.

Q: Wait. Did you just say suit?

A: Yes. With Iron Aid, you can refresh and deodorise dry-clean only garments. It even has the ability to dry silk and wool. The appliance is equipped with two motors to ensure these garments are treated as gently as they should be.

Q: How much workload

can it take?

A: It de-wrinkles up to 3kg of standard cotton items per cycle. Run as an independent cycle, you get a refreshed suit of five to six shirts without wrinkles in 25 minutes.

Q: Five to six shirts? I can do better than that with manual ironing.

A: Yes, but you are better off spending that time making money or working on changing the world.

Thingamajiggy: Just how do they do it?

An aluminium ‘unibody’ construction, a huge buttonless trackpad and new edge-to-edge glass screen. Apple’s latest MacBook is engineered to standards that don’t even exist yet. RIDZWAN A. RAHIM writes.

Now and then: Trendy recorders

There was a time when a reporter’s tape recorder looked like a tape recorder. This is no longer the case, says RIDZWAN A. RAHIM.
