CERTAIN cultural symbols of the Malays such as the kris has been politicised to place fear in other communities, according to Unity Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
He agreed with Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali (Ind-Pasir Mas) that this had been the case recently.
He said the cultural symbols of any one ethnic community should not be used to create fear in others.
Instead, he said, there should be better understanding among the various cultures to prevent a misunderstanding among the people.
Shafie also agreed with Johari Abdul's (PKR-Sungai Petani) call to the media to play a role in inculcating and promoting unity and integration among the younger generation.
Johari had stated that recent coverage by Utusan Malaysia bordered on racism.
He had said that such reports would lead to confusion instead of integration.
"With these stories and language used, how can you promote integration?"
Winding up points raised during the debate on the motion of thanks to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for his Royal Address, Shafie gave an assurance that he would look into ways for the media to disseminate messages on unity and integration in a more appropriate manner.
