PETALING JAYA: MCA Youth chief Datuk Liow Tiong Lai may vie for the deputy presidency in the party polls.
He said a decision would be made after gathering feedback from the party grassroots and his supporters.
Liow said he had received a substantial number of pledges of support to contest for a "high post".
He said this was his second reason for giving up the Youth leadership, the first being that there were others capable of taking over.
"The time has come for me to play a different and more effective role in the party to ensure its unity and stability."
He said this after attending Pharmaniaga's Excellent Vendors Award presentation at Sheraton Subang here yesterday.
The party, he said, needed to reform to regain the confidence of the Chinese community, and reverse the March 8 polls setback at the next general election.
"What MCA needs is strong leadership and a committed team to lift it up and bring all the Chinese in the country into its fold."
Liow said the fact that many MCA leaders and members had offered themselves for various positions in the party election showed that they were keen to strengthen the party.
On whether he would form a pact or join others in the contest for top posts, Liow said he would make his decision after meeting supporters and other members.
